Orchestra Toronto is auditioning for the position of Principal Trumpet!

Orchestra Toronto is currently holding auditions for the position of Principal Trumpet.

Orchestra Toronto is actively seeking a skilled and dedicated Principal Trumpet to join our ensemble. As one of Canada’s oldest community orchestras, we take pride in our rich musical heritage. The chosen candidate will take on the role commencing Thursday, April 25, 2024, until the conclusion of the season, concluding with our final concert on Saturday, June 8, 2024, with the potential for renewal for the 2024/2025 Season. This position encompasses a stipend.

Our orchestra performs a subscription season of six concerts at the George Weston Recital Hall, located in the Meridian Arts Centre at 5040 Yonge St. Additionally, we occasionally engage in outreach performances in and around North York. Our performances take place on Sunday afternoons, and Saturday evenings, with rehearsals held on Thursday evenings from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm at the Meridian Arts Centre in North York. We encourage candidates who are part of the Greater Toronto Area community to apply.

Auditions will be conducted in person on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Orchestra Toronto Principal Trumpet Audition Requirements

Please prepare a first movement from a trumpet concerto of your choice, including cadenza where applicable from the Royal Conservatory of Music Trumpet Syllabus, Grade 10 or above. This will be played unaccompanied.. If you wish to play a work that is not listed in the Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus it must be a work of an equivalent level. You must give prior notification to the personnel manager in writing and receive approval in return prior to the audition.

2. Please prepare four excerpts from the following list:

Grade 10

– Respighi, Ottorino, Pini di Roma, 2nd movement (Pini presso una Catacomba): mm. 17-26

– Rimsky-Korsakov, Nicolai, Scheherazade, op. 35, 2nd movement: mm. 109-111, 165-169, 193-201; 3rd movement: mm. 107-114; 4th movement: mm. 85-134

– Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, op. 36: movement 1: mm. 7-15

– Mahler, Gustav, Symphony No. 5: 1st movement (Trauermarsch): pick up to m. 1- m. 26; mm. 272-287

– Ravel, Maurice, Piano Concerto in G Major: 1st movement: mm. 20-41, 296-324

There will be an interview session for each candidate to explain why they would be a good principal player for this orchestra.
