APPRENTICE CONDUCTOR SPOTLIGHT 🎶

In line with our commitment to Education and Outreach, Orchestra Toronto proudly welcomes five exceptionally talented and dynamic apprentice conductors each year, all set to lead us through a season of 5 extraordinary concerts.

This position offers young conductors a unique opportunity to hone their skills in an environment that ignites artistic passion.

We are thrilled to announce the apprentice conductor for our very first concert of the season, "Strength Through Our Ancestors" – Please join us in welcoming Aidan Taylor!

Aidan Taylor is a conductor and composer from London, England; currently based in Toronto. Aidan studies at the University of Toronto, completing his degree in composition at the Faculty of Music. He is entering his third season as the chief conductor the Toronto Chamber Symphony and his first as music director of the newly formed Toronto Renaissance and Baroque Ensemble; he is also the executive director of the T Co. Publishing House. His work is internationally renowned by chamber ensembles and soloists and has been commissioned and toured around the country. His body of work includes 6 albums, dozens of chamber works and large scale ballets. He currently serves as principal English horn in Orchestra Toronto, and holds positions in other prestigious ensembles; as well as having performed in many world class venues including Toronto’s own Roy Thomson Hall.

Orchestra Toronto is deeply grateful for a recent generous contribution to our Student Mentorship program from an anonymous donor.

OT’s Student Mentorship program is a short-term membership in the orchestra designed to give emerging new talent the opportunity to play with a high-level orchestra and gain rare orchestral experience. Student fellows also have the opportunity to work with a professional artistic and administrative team and perform with the orchestra in the George Weston Recital Hall at the Meridian Arts Centre with a professional production team.

Meet OT’s Newest Member!

We're excited to introduce Duncan MacFarlane, our new Principal Trombonist. Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, Duncan is a freelance trombone player active in both the Toronto and Ottawa regions. Currently serving as the Principal Trombonist of Orchestra Toronto, Duncan performs with various other ensembles, including the Ottawa Pops Orchestra and University of Toronto's musical groups.

Duncan is presently pursuing his studies under the tutelage of Vanessa Fralick, Associate Principal Trombonist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, at the University of Toronto.

In Ottawa, Duncan has had the privilege of learning from some of Canada's most accomplished instructors. His mentors have included Dean Tronsgard, the former lead trombonist of Canada's RCMP band; Leonard Ferguson, the bass trombonist for the Ottawa Symphony; and Douglas Burden, who recently retired after 50 years as bass trombonist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Beyond his outstanding instructors, Duncan has been actively involved in several esteemed programs tailored for aspiring musicians. His educational journey has included Canterbury High School of the Arts and Interlochen Arts Academy, participation in the Ottawa Youth Orchestra, and membership in the Conn Selmer Centerstage Band – experiences that have enriched his musical growth and shaped his career.

We're so excited to welcome Duncan to our musical community and look forward to making great music together!

We are on a QUEST to raise funds for OT!

Re:Quest is our annual campaign of member-driven fundraisers to raise money for our cherished community orchestra so that we can keep making music for the love of it.

The proceeds from this fundraiser go toward supporting our 5 season performances, as well as our outreach and education initiatives. These include our Welcome Seats program for Newcomers to Canada, our Student Mentorship initiatives, our Apprentice Conductor program and providing music learning opportunities for underserved youth through Beyond 3:30.
